I am finishing off a cabin that I have subcontracted much of the work on. The cabin is a chalet style with vaulted ceilings (roof pitch is 12 in to 1 ft, I believe). There is a large glu-lam beam that goes the length of the cabin. The drywall is butted (gap of 1/4″ to 3/8″ of an inch anyway…) up to the top of the glu-lam. I am looking for a method of finishing this area off. Should I just put a thick bead of caulk up between the beam and the drywall? I was reading the label of a tube of DAP caulk which suggested that a piece/strip of foam be inserted in the gap prior to caulking (if the gap is greater than 3/8 of an inch or so). Any ideas or suggestions? Also…..any ideas on how to finish the exposed glu-lam beam? It looks pretty good as it is with the exception of a few patching compound marks. I am thinking that it needs some sort of protection….maybe a light sanding and three coats of a wipe on poly??? Thanks for any suggestions….

So you subbed out the work and that was the best they could do?
