Was wondering if anyong had an insight on the best place to buy power and other tools. Would it be Lowes, Home Depot, or somewhere else? I want to get a gift certificate for the finish carpenter who is building my house…he has a wood shop at his house. I dont know what kind of tools he wants or needs, so just want to give the gift certificate. thanks

Suggest you pose this question over on the Breaktime forum. You will get an earful, for sure <g>. Only an occasional BT person posts here.
This jobless recovery has done more to promote the consumption of exquisite chocolate than the finest chocolatier. Cost be damned.
Ask him...

Y'know, I was just wondering if an Amazon.com certificate would be more helpful. They do sell power tools (I've seen Bosch, Dewalt etc) listed but I would ask the BT folks if they ever purchase power tools thru Amazon. This jobless recovery has done more to promote the consumption of exquisite chocolate than the finest chocolatier. well, here is what I did...I went to Lowes and Home Depot and looked at the tool dept and HD had a lot more stuff, and all the brands I knew, so that is what I went with. Thanks for all the advice.

Since your carp already has a woodshop, you might consider a Lee Valley gift certificate. They carry some accessories (like jigs & associated hardware for making same) for power tools that I've not seen at the big box stores. They also have some gadgets that I've given as gifts for woodworkers who wouldn't buy themselves a gift (my favorite was a tape measure that reads right to left)...
I second that idea. Lee Valley is always good for neat stuff.I am at the age where food has taken the place of sex in my life. In fact, I've just had a mirror put over my kitchen table - Rodney Dangerfield

I would say go with amazon.com. Maybe he's not looking for a tool. Maybe he wants a new design book or a book on some odd technique he wants to learn. Amazon has more than just tools for a woodworker. If you live near chicago, Berland's has just about any tool you could want.
You can compare prices at: http://www.toolseeker.com/ and remember, you get what you pay for.
toolcrib of the north through amazon. I like them. But dont I repeat dont buy your tool from HD or blowes
