I am in the market for a first purchase of a contractor style airless sprayer. I have looked at the Campbell Hausfeld and Wagner product lines at the local Home Depot & Lowes etc. Company websites don’t seem to provide much in the way of sales info. – – why I would want one brand or feature over another i.e. do you want a diaphram or piston pump ? which system delivers the best performance, lowest maintenance and easiest clean-up ? which system is the most cost effective ? I was hoping that finehomebuilding had written a survey article regarding sprayers and would have made an editorial recommendation but I must be looking in the wrong place or it doesn’t exist. Last but not least – – – where is the least expensive place to purchase said sprayer ??

Kyle, Don't waste your money on an airless sprayer that costs less than $1000.00. (And that's bottom line) You need a piston pump and a 1/2 h.p. motor minimum. Otherwise you will have to thin the paint or stain and that will cause you nothing but grief on every job. Thinned paint causes sheetrock to swell and provides poor coverage on anything else.

I'll assume your talking about an HVLP system. If your looking for the least expensive unit, go for the Campbell Housfield. It's about a hundred dollars less than the Wagner with no real performance difference. Clean up is the same for all units, no matter how much you pay. If your just beginning don't be affraid to go for the least expensive models, when it comes time to upgrade you'll appriciate it that much more. Good Luck. TC

Go with a graco or a titan, for performance and availability of parts.

Kyle, you did say airless, so I'm assuming you don't mean HVLP (which uses compressed air); After using a cup gun for lacquer work for the last twenty years (!!) I recently purchased the Wagner at Home Depot, the big one, just around a thousand dollars, and haven't had a lick of trouble with it (we've shot about three hundred gallons of water base, oil base, and lacquer so far). I think I heard that Titan bought Wagner, or visa versa, so parts are going to be available. Make sure you understand the different tips and get the right ones for the right job. And keep it Clean.
