Just gettint into scraping and painting our trim on our house. Hasn’t been painted in years. Looks like and old oil base enamel. Paint chipping of down to the bare wood in places, but the woods in good shape. What type of primer should I use, oil or laxtex? I plan on using a laxtex top coat, possibly spraying in places. Hate the mess of an oil but will do if it the best results. |

My favorite is Moorewhite from Benny Moore. It's an alkyd primer -- basically an oil primer. It was reformulated some years back to reduce VOC stuff, and it isn't quite as good as before, but it's still one of the best.
Generally, because oil based primers cure slowly instead of drying quiuckly, they tend to have more cghance to p3enetrat the wood for good bonding and sealing.
