I am planning on having my house resided and really like the look of newly installed white cedar shingles. Is there a way I could seal the shingles to help preserve the look of new clear cedar? Will any sealing become a maintenance headache? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks

Im confused . Are we talking white or raw shingles? You cant keep the look of raw sealed cedar very long , maybe a couple of years.

I believe he's talking about Eastern white cedar (very blond in color when raw) as opposed to Western red cedar. They tend to go silver pretty fast.
Sorry, DJ, don't have a solution for you. Formerly BEMW at The High Desert Group LLC
Consider using a "bleaching" stain. It is the best way to get a gray and natural look, uniformly.
I think Olympic has a weathering gray stain which is where you will eventually end up. Ive done a lot of western cedar and have experienced years of people wanting to keep it natural, including me . I stained my roof and it was awsome for about two years . Ive coated it several times and its a losing battle. Seems the only alternative is to use the weathering stain on it and when it flecks, it will match hopefully. Ive bleached the bottom of several houses and it doesnt match the above lumber . It is pretty sealed natural for a while and I dont blame you for wanting to preserve the look. I have never saw one kept up with success and painting was part of my living for the public.
