I’m a full time firefighter that does part time remodeling and handyman work on my days off.
I had one of my regular customers who recently moved, want me to bid installing a new attic fan in her hallway. Long story short it should be a simple install. Easy wiring, good framing to mount to, and I was going to repaint the hallway anyway.
My question is this….
What do you guys out there recomend for a “good” brand? I have installed the premium Dayton ones in the past and never had any complaints. This lady is very paticular and will pay for a high quality product if it is worth while, and I can justify it.
Whats the latest greatest thing going nowdays?
Thanks
Heath

Tamarack Technology makes two smaller WH fans 1000 and 1600 cfm, I think. Much smaller than typical. The big ones can produce a small breeze throughout the house. Tamarack fans however, run super quiet in comparison and have motorized doors that open and then close. The doors are R-22 if I remember right. Other fans are a hole in the ceiling year round. I have the 1000cfm - exchanges air just fine, albeit slower and is quieter, but can't produce an in-house breeze.
Tamarak also make a Ghost Fan.And there is another supplier with similar designs. Air vent.http://www.energyfederation.org/consumer/default.php/cPath/30_407
I had not seen this style of fan before. I will check with the lumber yard and see what thier price might be. I will ahve to ask the client how much breeze she is wanting. I calculated up the sq ft and should need 3000cfm using the old method.
I like the doors on top of the unit. I have always boxed in the sides of the fans so insulation does not fall back into the louvers. And then make a insulated top for it in the winter.
I guess I could make half tops with hinges and a small lightweight spring to close them down when the fan kicks off.
I will also look at the "ghost" model that the same company offers. It seems like a bigger fan with up to 2600cfm, so it might be a contender.
Thanks for the info guys....

I have the Tamarack 1000 as well. Quiet, and those tight-sealing foam doors are great. I believe it only consumes 60watts.
Running for many years with no troubles.
I used to have a conventional fan, and it was such a PITA to seal and unseal them seasonally, plus the weather can swing about, making you wish it was open or closed when it was not.
I think too much focus is placed on the volume moved. More than half the battle is just blowing the hot air out of the attic.
The fan allows us to go without AC when we would otherwise need it, saving a lot of energy.
I'm definitely a fan of whole houses. I lived in half a house once, but it was too drafty, like as though somebody left a fan running...
Sorry - couldn't resist.
I do have a point to make though. If you are in any kind of cold heating climate, be sure it is a kind that can be sealed tight in winter, or moisture will be vented into the attic where it will conmdense and cause mold or other moisture related problems.
