OK …
got a question …
needed to iron on some preglued edge banding …..
on melamine, if anyone cares …
so … I needed an iron.
So … seeing as how last time I opted for contact cement to glue some real wood edge veneer banding on …
I decided to make a trip to Rocklers and finally pick up a veneer iron.
Till I saw the price … $60.
I took it out of the box … a simple heating element with a cheap looking dial …
and crappy looking handle … plus a stand.
So I left it there … went to Target …
and found a household iron on sale for $15!
Cotton setting …. worked just fine.
I’ve used a household iron before … always planned on getting a “real” iron …
Not now. Now I got an iron in the van … plus it steams …
Anyways … why bother with an overpriced veneer iron?
What am I missing here …

I don't know.
I got an iron from one woman customer. .......and a hairdryer from another. Both work fine for the job used for. Doesn't look as cool hanging in the van as a veneer iron nor heat gun, but cool was never on your mind. I like the size of the iron for revigorating a loose vinyl tile or plam.
And it's got steam.

I have been using a retired iron from DW, no teflon coating that's why retired. Works just fine. Although I have to admit I'd never used a veneer iron before.
Comes in handy in the shop or van in case you want to iron your work clothes. Make sure you carry an ironing board as well.
I did the same a few years ago. Went to salvation army and bought an old, no steam iron (with the woven wrap on the power cord). Must be over 50 years old.
Works great! Is nice and small so it fits in my toolbox. No plastic parts to break and it cost me $5.

Hey, may be I should go cordless, I'll dig out my coal iron.

I have always carried a hand me down iron in my truck for the veneer/edgetape repair thing.
Plus you can always iron your shirt if you got to meet the guys at the bar after work.

Now all they need to do is put a yellow handle on it.

No more wrinkled shirts at work. And now you can have fresh grilled cheese sandwiches at the jobsite.
If it's a steam iron you can iron your t shirt on the way to the jobsite but you will need a converter for your truck .....

More importantly, you have a Rockler that you can "go to"? I didn't even know that it was an actual retail chain, thought it was mostly internet sales! Man, I think I might be a bit jealous...
Don't be to jealous ...
they're new .... been to them twice ... both times ... nothing close to what I had picked out of the catalog. Their "in stock" is terrible ...
I think HD or Lowes might actually have a better selection.
First time I went in looking for ... veneer! They had small section set aside for the veneers ... and no sense to the combination of sizes/woods on the shelves.
I thought .. just how much space does a rool of veneer take up? There's plenty room to have what's in the catalog ...
Second trip was for screws ... looking for the conformat screws or their high-low thread screws for melamine ... again ... no such luck ... nothing close ... and not even a good selection of the regular screws they did have on the shelves.
I took a good walk around ... thinking of stuff I'd go there for ... it was very hit or miss ... mostly miss. Couldn't figure what their market was ... not the same as the catalog, that's for sure.
Just remembered .. I was also looking for veneer adhesives ... only one choice on the shelves ... got a can ... opened it at the job site ... skinned over and shot.
Went back ... all "3 cans" they had left ... same deal.
Right up the road .. about 15 min .. there's a family run woodworkers supply place ...
They are way high in pricing ... but they stock everything ... and lots of everything.
Rocklers won't last. Both times I was there ... heard other people bitching politely because they couldn't find what they came in for. Not sure if it's the company or the managers that order the stuff. There's a problem somewhere along the lines.

Think it is the managers.
We have Wood Workers Supply here, and although they are closer to the catalog items, they seem to target a specific market. Mostly they try to sell thier classes, and projects, which are aimed at what they stock. It is staffed by woodworkers however, so they are more helpfull than the fuzzy faced kids at HD or Lowes. I have ordered a few items that they did not stock and paid catalog price w/o the shipping charge if I pick it up at the store.
Veneer iron @ $60.00. I have had mine for 25 years. Paid around $20.00 for it then. Wouldn't but one now.....know better.
Dave
I got some all metal yard sale special clothes iron.. Might have been all of of one or two bucks...
But I won't be ironing any shirts...
60 bucks... Don't think so...

The price will never come down if you keep buying the "cheap" ones. Ya gotta help out those little iron makers. They got families too ya know.

Who needs iron when ya got brass?

LOL!!
I was all set to post that I beat your $15.00 by nearly half! But I see that even my $8.00 iron was extravagant compared to the above posts!

ok ....
now I gotta go dig out the WW2 era iron I have in the basement ...
got it and some other goodies when cleaning out an old basement in one of the rentals me and my Dad used to rehab ...
I checked it at the time ... heated up just fine ...
no teflon, though!
the plan the whole time was to have it as a "van iron" ...
got it home ... looked too cool to dirty up after I cleaned it!
I'll dig it out and post a pic of the antique iron ...
Jeff
btw .... I still have no idea who took our pics! Get yer film developed, dammit.Buck Construction, llc Pittsburgh,PA

Jeff, I used to live in the Burgh, have you ever gone to Daniel's Hardware in South Park for tools? It's on the corner of Curry Rd. and Brownsville. They always had a great selection and good prices. Very unique place, they sold pots and pans in the front, and just about anything from basic handtools to Delta Unisaw's in the back. Go Steelers!!! -Ed
never stopped in ...
didn't know they sold tools ...
they are big time appliance guys now ...
I'll have to stop in and see if they still stock tools ...
