I recently had a disagreement with my father over which wide plank flooring would move more (with seasonal fluctuations in moisture). I said oak would move more than white pine, he said the opposite. I am trying to decide on a rustic looking floor for a timberframe I am building in Northern Vermont.
Who was right?

First, shame on you for disagreeing with your father. Go to your room.
I have a copy of a chart that is attributed to the Architectural Woodwork Institute ... I don't know where I got it. It lists various specs for wood, including the "possible width change in a 12" board when moisture is reduced from 10% to 5%. Figures are for plain sawn unluss noted."
Pine, Eastern or Northern white 8/64"
Oak, red, plain sawn 11/64"
Oak, red, quarter sawn 7/64"
