Will I get fined for living in my addition without final inspection?
Our contractor abandoned ship close to the end of the project. We have been using and living in our addition (master bed/bath & den) for over a year. For various reasons we are finally getting the final plumbing inspection done in a week (which will probably mean having to do an overall final inspection on everything in the near future). Will we get fined for living in our addition? Should we move everything out?? We live in northern jersey if that helps…

tough question deserves tough answers...........
It'll depend on the inspector. Bad day, bad girlfriend, bad hangover or insert your mallady here.
If it's unsafe, they might be forceful . Handrails and good stairs can be a stickler for these guys.
Devices and cover plates-you bet.
Don't be having an open box with wire nuts showing.
It is a certainly specific thing Inspection. You may find that you'll be paying for an extension on the permit..............some have a set time period.
If the county or whatever jurisdictioin had a real need for bucks, surcharges can almost be accepted.
I don't think anyone can tell you except inspection or perhaps those that deal with that particular office. Certificate of occupancy means exactly that.
Best of luck.
and don't blame me if you move all the stuff and then the guy signs off in his warm car, in the driveway.
I think you could make an anonymous phone call to your local building department explaining your dilema. Some jurisdictions don't require a cert. of occupancy for remodels or additions, but they do want to final out the permit. This would mean that you may not be in trouble for living there before the final inspections.
As Calvin noted, they might hit you with an extension fee if you've passed the expiration date on the permit.
Another thought: was the permit in your name or the contractor's name? If it was in his name, you might be off the hook.
every jurisdiction is different
Be honest with them and I doubt it
If they don't play fair, just burry them in the back forty
