Wind Chill 40-45* Below Zero this mornin
I have a Big Band Era Dance Hall attached to my house, that is now a woodshop. I thought it would be best for it to have a separate entrance (keeps noise and dust out of the house and keeps the family from just wandering in and distracting me). When I work in the shop the commute is just out the front door, take 25 steps, and in the shop door.
Today, that was actually a tough commute…it is brutal out there. Actually -8* now and will warm up to -5*…but with the wind, it is a might cold out.
I’m gonna use this opportunity to find and foam in leaks along the funky old rim in the basement. Air leaks are just screaming on a day like this.

My appreciation for living in one of the warmest regions of Canada just went way up.
I live in the Warm South...part of Minnesota. It seems odd to most people that your part of Canada is further South than most of the Northern States of the U.S.
-13 actual, -39 windchill in the Twin Cities right now. It was pretty refreshing when I went out to get the Sunday newspaper off the front step.
Refresssshsshushushing.
The lowest part of Canada is level with northern California.
Another piece of trivia: If you were in Windsor Ontario and you went due north, what would be the next country you would hit...........................................................the U.S. (detroit)

Another interesting thing about Minnesota is how tall the state is on the North/South axis...CA, TX, and AK are "taller" and maybe NV. I live near the Iowa border, but this week I have a trip to the Candadian border of the state (flying up to a Marvin Window factory tour Warroad, MN actually further North than International Falls). It is another climate altogether up there (-20*F right now, without windchill).Another funny thing is that where I live the Mississippi runs East West. I live South of the Mississipi and South of WI.
basswood,
La Cesent? Sold a fair amount of equipment in that area..
I'm just 30 min. up river from La Crescent, in the Winona area.
Basswood
Sold a lot of equipment into the Winona area as well. Next time I'm thru town I'll give you a ring..
The only lift I've used in Winona is an ancient rental Lull from TriMac (to set a 9-0, 6-8) patio door unit into a 2nd story balcony.Give me a heads up here at BT if you are headin' this way (and visa versa) I'll try emailing through BT...not sure if my email here is current.
Have a great time on the Marvin tour (done 2) ... make sure you try the Walleye Pike!
Best,
Jeff
My cousin lives in Bemidji, he once pointed out that he lives further north than 40% of the population of Canada.

I was in Bemidji once !.
.
.. . . . . . . .
Bemidji? Cool town. That' s where they have underground tunnels at the college to get around in the winter instead of freezing their azzes off on the surface. Also the home of Paul Bunyon.

there just isn't a lot to see or do up there in January, the one view I liked the best was Bemidji in the rear view mirror.

.. . . . . . . .
I was there in the fall. It was a cool town. Good place to drink a beer. My Uncle went to college there in the late sixties early seventies. That's also where he met his late wife.

it's along story ,but the folks we went up there to see were a couple of nutjobs.we were stuck there and couldn't wait to get away from them.

I understand. That can turn a one day visit into a long week.

Yeah, my cousin tells me stories about cross-country skiing at -20F.He's from Virginia, none of us understand why he moved up there. Said he liked the area, got used to it when he was stationed in North Dakota."Why not Minot?":)

I knew some old Finnish guys that used to live in Minnesota, They said it was too cold for them and left but liked the lake fishing, I figure if those guys could not take it there its someplace im never going too.
Finland is up at the Artic Circle...seems like Minnesota would be no big deal.

Well said, (actually it's why we Minnesotains live so long.. and no- it's not because we're freezed dried smart aleck ;-) We keep the weak inferior types out and only allow the strong hardy type to live here...
Couple weeks ago when we had a decent cold snap, I tried to snap a pic of the bank clock at -36 F. My digi cam was too cold from being in the truck all night.
I just went to put more gas and de-icer in the missus van. Nearly froze! -15 F and clear skies, which makes for a dang cold time! This weekend was the annual Snowflake Ski Jump tournament up the valley. I'm not sure if they jumped today because of high winds, but yesterday was a decent one. This cold didn't hit us until last night, around 5 ish.
It's funny that we can be as much as 10 degrees lower than La Crosse. Must be the valley. Of course, we don't get as much wind, usually.
Neither cold, nor darkness will deter good people from hastening to the dreadful place to quench the flame. They do it not for the sake of reward or fame; but they have a reward in themselves, and they love one another.

I live at the end of a valley here and cold air can settle in...we get colder readings than Winona by a few degrees.Tomorrow morning, setting up tools at the job will not be fun...but the work will be interesting.Brrrrr,Brian

It's like they say - there are places with more extreme weather than Minnesota, but no one lives there. :)
it's colder now than it was four hours ago.... the wc is -9,
the winds are finally dying, but there is a bit of lake effect to add to the fun !

. . . . . . . .
but it changes every minute, I just realized I've never seen temps in tenths of a degree.

I was gonna putz around out in the shop...went out there and found a layer of ice on a bucket of water...hmmm. I was just in there last evening and had the wood stove going so I thought it would stay above freezing overnight. It is 24* in the shop, I started the wood stove back up just to keep my tools somewhat warm (have to load them in the van in the morning (high of 11* tomorrow). Guess I better bring the cordless Li batteries and glue inside.
got to wait for the wind to die down before I start a fire...
.
.. . . . . . . .
I'm lucky...the flue was still warm...a few hot coals still in the stove.I really don't want to go back out there. Brrrrhhh.
dammit,
I just noticed I have to go to town, now i gotta get dressed.
.
.. . . . . . . .
I'm gettin' all layered up to go back out myself...whooohooo.

That's probably what it is in my "workshop" (project house) right now. And I'm not over there to stoke the wood stove. 9 is almost enough to make me wanna call the HVAC guys in :)

Basswood,
I picked my wife up at the airport in that near 40 below wind chill.. she came from Florida where she'd spent the past week.
Were those tears really caused by the wind or was it from leaving 75-80 degree weather for this?
ps I suspect the real reason is that it costs us less than $100.00 round trip including first class on the return trip for the week there (daughter works for an airline)
That 120* temp drop would have to be tough.
Thanks for the report. I've tried to work in below zero weather. It's rough. It's a little easier to ski in it, probably because ski clothes are like wearing a Michelin man sleeping bag. The big mittens are nice too.
All that makes me very content to be here in L.A. Fifty degrees and sunny at 8 AM, forecast high of seventy-nine today, a few degrees above normal. I'm going out for a bike ride, try to get in thirty miles or so. Shorts and sandals all the way. <G>
Hmmm. All this time, I figured you were in NY, due to your moniker. We like winters here, but only to a point...and that point is right around zero for me.

I don't know if your getting all the snow that we have been for the past week but the other day when we has some record snowfall for a 24 hour period the weather man came on and was telling how he was standing outside of the broadcast station(why they think they have to do this amazes me)telling us all how pretty the trees looked with all the new snow on them!
I thought to myself, they look pretty in December after the first few snow falls but by Feb they sorta lose some of that beauty!
One of the reasons that I wanted to move back here from TX was the winters, I really did miss them.
Doug
It's not cold here. Probably in the 50's but the wind is blowing like crazy. I've heard the metal roof rippling a bunch of times.
We've already lost phone service once today. It had to be right in the middle of one of my posts too!!!

It has been the first "real Winter" going back a few years. We only got 2-3" inches from that last storm, but it has been snow and cold pretty steady for several months now.Snowmobile sales are way up!
Hmmm. All this time, I figured you were in NY, due to your moniker.
Been in L.A. on family business for a while but I'll be back in NY State come spring.
Just back from my bike ride, 22.3 mi at a relaxed pace. Lovely sunny day here. Can't say that I miss the cold. :-)
The wind had died down and it is sunny...so I might just go crosscountry skiing...the bike ride sounds nice though. I used to do bike tours all over...too busy this past decade.I should work on fixing that.
I'm north of where Hudson Valley Carpenter would be if he wasn't smart enough to be away. Just came in from snowblowing. A futile effort; the wind is swirling and its freaking cold!
I see. Good to have company. When is seems cold here, I remind myself that this is a moderate climate. Heck, this latitude is only half way between the equator and the North Pole. Plenty of real estate colder than this...of course relatively few people choose to live much farther North.
did you see any of that 50mph winds they were predicying?
Yep.Very cold and windy. Worst in years.
Have you ever read "Winter Dance" by Gary Paulsen? He and his wife were living in northern Minnesota when he wrote it. He had some sled dogs and ran a trap line in the winter. Someone suggested that he run the Iditerod. That's the beginning of a great story.
I've been riding recumbent bikes for the last six-seven years. Fast and comfortable for hours and hours.
Check out http://www.crazyguyonabike.com for many tour logs and photos.
Haven't read Winter Dance, sounds good.I used to do my road riding on an Italian bike (Ardielli). I do some mountain biking in the bluffs around here...no road trips in years.I'll have to check your link out.
Just looked outside and the flowers are starting to push up through the ground and the stupid grass is probably going to start growing soon.
If I look out my front and back windows I can see snow.......................................................................................................... a long way a way on top of the mountains but then I can see snow 365 days of the year...................................along way a way: ))))))))))

I know, I know. And this was a bad winter for us:)

Interesting. I re-read Jack London's short story To Build a Fire last night. It's probably the best description of freezing to death. Guy's out in -75º walking to camp, breaks through a crust by a spring and get his legs wet to the knees.
Pretty authentic sounding.

I like Jack London. That is a dark tale, but gripping.I've been out all day at -60* backcountry skiing. I once took a snow coach to Old Faithful and spent a week skiing out to Ashton, ID. During that trip we were out in the snowy cold wilderness, with nobody except our party of three around. Saw no other humans for 6 days. The temp. range on that adventure was -20 to +20*F (below zero most of the time). We were experienced outdoorsmen and were well outfitted, but had it not "warmed up" the last day or had we become injured or lost I think we would have been in trouble.By the end of the trip, our sleeping bags had accumulated condensation and the moisture had "derated" the bags. We started to wake up shivering and realized we needed to air out the bags each day...even below zero the frost in the bags can sublimate into the air. Imagine us with the bags hanging over the top of our packs, flapping in the breeze as we skied. This was a gamble, if we wiped out skiing the bags would be coated in snow and if it started snowing or blowing snow, we had to stop and quickly stow the bags.I had a bivy sac and added that over my bag, this made it warmer. We had some margin for error (like the bivy sac and extra food), but we had to have very sharp wits too. Having experience, smarts in the moment and preparedness is not always enough with mother nature. It was a bracing experience.
"I re-read Jack London's short story To Build a Fire"is that the one where he finally gets it going and then the snow falls off the tree and puts it out? - that's a depressing one...."there's enough for everyone"
<then the snow falls off the tree and puts it out?>
Yep. I had a bowl of ice cream, took it to bed and read that. Since we keep upstairs at 48º now, it felt uncomfortably real!

"To Build A Fire"
I think it was in that story, that London said "at -50, spit would freeze before it hit the ground."
Haven't read any J. London in 25 years..... unless maybe an excerpt in R.D. while waiting for the dentist.
40 below huh?
Is that -40 Fahrenheit?
OR
-40 Celsius?

It was cold up north here all day up to -17 now but spent the afternoon out in my shop .....no heat cutting wainscoting and trim for the bath remodel. laser on the mitre saw didn't want to work real well. at least the wind went down that is what gets me the most. Have fun at Marvin Windows it is a good trip....I wonder if the they still put you up at the strawberry patch motel?
These temps aren't even close to the state records though..... I remember that winter very well... we were framing a motel on the shores of Mille Lacs... so cold out that the air lines for our framing guns iced up even with putting isopropyl in the lines.
warm wishes.
Looking forward to the trip. It will be good to take a break. It is about 15* warmer here, but still in negative territory. Thanks for the warm wishes,Bass
-38*F @ International Falls, MN this morning. Bet they are glad the wind died down.-2*F here...rather warm <g>Actually warmer than Nome, AK right now...how strange is that.
