window cutouts

Does anyone use a router to do your window and door cutouts during rough framing? I saw someone do it on TV once. I tried it with a 1/2″ flush cutter in 7/16″ OSB and it smoked and burned. Maybe a spiral cutter? Would appreciate any insight.
