I have a very basic window question. I am planning on replacing two old wooden windows in a dormer on my house. I obviously need to get the window measurements to place the order. In order to get the proper size, is the only way to measure is to take off the interior trim and then get the rough opening from that? Or is it better to pull off the outer trim work and go from there?
Thanks for any help. ktkamm

Ha-ha! There are no "basic" questions.
Are you talking about replacing with a new unit, sash replacement, or perhaps vinyl replacements?
As you seem to be suggesting by your questions, it sounds like you plan to replace the entire unit.....jambs and all.
By removing the interior trim, you will expose the rough framing and can get your measurements and check for square from there.

Is this double hung?
Is it old enough that the sashes are on cords?
Are you doing a replacement insert that keeps the same trim?

It is an old double sash Anderson. Each window can be remocved by depressing latches on te interior and slid out when the unit is at the right spot. To put the windows back in, you line up lg wooden protrusions on the side with matching indents in the frame. No sash cords.
I plan on replacing the whole unit.
Thanks.
There was an article in the last fhb, on using viynl replacement windows, however I'm pretty sure I know the window you are talking about and realize the windows in fhb were not what you are looking for. You want new windows, jambs and all. As suggested earlier you are going to need the trim off, just measure the outsides of the existing window and use them. If your making it bigger or something I always deduct on inch from the height of framing and one inch from the width. What is the exterior of your house, brick, stone, stucco, siding. You should probaly mention that when you order your windows.
Andersens are a great company. You can still get all the same parts and replacements. Measure the glass size and take that measure to the Andersen rep and they can have you a new matching unit in three weeks - sometimes less. If you can read the little logo etched into the glass in a corner, that can help them too with knowing the glass type as far as coated or Gas fill, etc.If you are replacing with other than Andersen, you can use the glass size to find which unit you have (or one of us can look it up) and that will give you the rough openning size you have to work with. That way, you don't have to pry trim apart until you are ready to replace.BTW, Double sash does not mean anything really. based on your fuller descripotion, this is a douyble hung window style.Double sash could mean a casement with two sashes like the CS235 or a slider, or even an awning with one sash fixed and one sash operable.
It is always good to use the right terminology whjen ordering if you want to get the right item.

I did mean to say double hung, however, I thought that would be bragging.
NO body brags around here.
So it would stand out if you did.

why not use the sash replacement kits that pella sells? Seems like that would be the easiest way, directions online.
Why would anybody want to replace an Andersen with a Pella?

I didnt read down far enough, course not. I was mostly suggesting the quick replacement sashes now avaialable from most manufacturers. Easier than removing the entire window, trim etc. thats all.
Yep, fer sure.I am guilty of jumping in tooo soon sometimes without realizing there are already 20-30 responces already covering what I said.
