I just put a new vinyl tilt and turn window ($1000CAN for a 72×42)in my daughters bedroom, what a job. I used to have single glazed aluminum windows were the nailing flange is tucked under the beveled cedar siding. To remove the old window I had to rough cut a 2″ strip of the siding all around the window to expose the nailing flange. Then the old window comes out and the new window goes in. Then I cut some more of the siding to make room for some 1×4 trim boards that cover the nailing flange. I like this idea and I think it looks very nice to have an additional frame around the window frame. This window is on the first floor, I was able to stand of the roof overhang for the main floor. The roof has a 5/12 pitch so it is not bad to stand on the roofing tiles.
The next window I am going to replace is a side window in my master bedroom. My house is built on a slope, from the bedroom window to the ground it is about 2.5 storys high. And, there is no roof overhang to stand on.
So what is the best way to do this?
1) Putting scaffolding up would be a lot of work.
2)I could rent a boom lift and work from my neighbors side. The lift would be 12 feet away from the house.
The biggest problem I see is to cut the siding to expose the nail flange and to cut it to insert the 1×4 trim. I just don’t feel to comfortable to lean out the window opening, hold myself somehow and operate a cordless 6 1/2″ circular saw.
Any idea and comment is welcome!!!

Two ladders and a plank/pic?
Can't use ladders and a plank. I would have to angle the ladders at almost 45degree since some bushes and a fence is in the way. Don't think that is the safest way to do this.
Rent scaffolding. It goes up/down fairly quickly, and you won't feel rushed.
happy?
Any idea how much scaffolding is going to cost me in Coquitlam, BC, Canada? House is about 24' wide and 3 1/2 storys tall. Maybe I paint the gable side at the same time the window goes in.
I understand that prices vary widely. I rented enough scaffolding to paint my 2-story house for a few hundred $$ (sorry, don't remember exactly) about 18 months ago.
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people

Pump jacks and a wide plank. Virtually no footprint but bushes can be a pain when you are setting everything up. I've used them well up to 30 feet or so. After you rough cut the siding and get the window installed, hold some trim up around the window and mark where you need to cut the siding for the trim. Temporarily but firmly attach a straight edge (long scrap of 3/4" plywood works well) to the siding to guide the saw for your final cut. Prime these cut edges before you install the siding, then a good bead of caulk before you drop in the trim boards.
