whats the proper height for window well drains? I’ve seen ilustrated in FHB the top of drain sits below the crushed rock. But what I’ve seen being done is the drain flush with top of rock.
It makes sense to me to set the height below the rock so that any water will go straight to the drain rather then sitting up against the foundation wall; having the drain only as a back up should the water level reach the top of rock.
any thoughts?

I'v always set them below the rock and had no problem.
That seems to make more actaully sense to me, as the drain will actually get used, instead of waiting for a flood to overwhelm the rock to the point where it reaches the top and the hits the drain.
the house in back of me that was just built has it set to top of rock. while it looks good to actually see the drain, still seems better placed to have it below the rock.
Slightly exposed makes it cleanable and less likely to clog. The drain does not need to be lower than the level of the stone because it only carries away water in a deluge or when the ground is frozen. Most of the water drains through the rock into the ground.
thanks for insight from the other point of view. perhaps I'll start off with top of rock, I can always lower it if the need arises.
I use perforated pipe, and cap it below the surface of the rock. The rock is more attractive than the pipe, so I'd rather not see the end of it. If you use a drain with solid pipe below it, and water that gets below the drain inlet will have to travel all the way down to the footing drains. I'd rather give it somewhere to go.
