I’ve been observing the snow patterns on roofs in our town this winter and have noticed on a number of roofs that the first place that clears on apparently well insulated homes is the northern peak of the roof, whether or not there happens to be a gable or other type of vent. How come?

We've had more snow since the last post and I see the same patterns re-occurring. The snow melt seems to consistently occur on the coldest end of the roof! The east end on a west/east peak and on the north end of a north/south peak. One of these houses, across the street, you can see the pattern of the rafters snow-covered as are the eaves. My house, (the new part) is the reverse: the eaves are melted off.
