I’ve learned alot lurking around here for the last few weeks. I’m hoping the experienced voices here will be able to offere some sound advice.
I’ve been on my own doing home improvements for about two years. Mostly smaller projects, a couple of room additions, mostly windows and doors, repairs, some fences. I’m a small one man company. Thanks to word of mouth, I’ve been really busy all spring and summer although I’ve never been backed up more than a few weeks. Business is good when it’s warm but I’m going to finish up a couple of small projects in the next few days and I have nothing else scheduled. I’ll get calls and have some work through the winter but if it’s like last year, not enough to keep me going.
Last year wasn’t bad…my wife was working full time and a slow winter just meant a few less dinners out. Now we have a son and my wife’s home full time. Feels like alot of pressure.
I keep hearing about the boom times but they haven’t hit here. Maybe that’s good…maybe the recession won’t effect us either:)
So, I’ll have the time to do something else. Just wondering if there’s anyone else that has any good ideas for survivng the winter. I thought about making lawn furnature and selling it in my front yard but who wants a picnic table in January? I could pick up a part time seasonal job but $6/hr doesn’t exactly pay the bills either. Thought about seeing if there’s a builder that needs help but the economy is really slow and slowing. There are alot of really qualified people out of work (I think unelmployment’s 13% now here).
Any suggestions?
