the directions that came with my dayton 2 speed wall switch (for my exhaust fan)are a cheezy illegible photocopy, very difficult to read.
there are 5 screw terminals on the back of the toggle type switch. and a red, white and black wire coming from the motor.
I tried googling grainger, dayton, fans, wiring etc. etc.
any ideas?
thanks.

Good luck!
Is the switch designed to also control lights?
Use a continuity checker to see if any of the switch terminals are wired together, and which terminals are switched. Likely a couple of the terminals are just a dummy to let you connect the two whites. The other three would take the incoming black and the two remaining wires from the motor, but I can't tell you in what order.
(Gee, I didn't even know they still made two-speed fans -- figured everything was variable speed with a "dimmer" now.)
happy?
the switch is for the fan for sure, but they may not make them anymore -- I've had it kicking around for about 3 years. problem was, grainger sold me the fan and switch. my guy tried to wire it and we realized they'd given me a single speed fan. (well, it was already installed and trimmed and painted so I wasn't in a hurry to take it out.) I just used the inadequate single speed fan til today when it took a dump.
grainger sold me the 2 speed fan, and said I could bring the original back. (I don't know about after 3 years, but I'll still try, after all it was their screw up)
I meant, is it possible that the switch is designed to ALSO control a light? That would be another reason for the extra terminals. In theory you would just need three terminals for the fan -- basically a single pole/double throw switch with one additional "throw" location for off. The incoming black would be wired to the common terminal of this switch, and the red and black to the other two (which to which wouldn't matter except to determine whether you go off/low/high or off/high/low).
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people
happy?
you've helped ( I think) I'm going to try in the a.m.
- no, I don't think it was ever intended to wire a light.
thanks alot.
I found this discussion about a two speed Dayton fan control...do you have the same one? http://www.artglassforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453
thats amazing. dude bought the same crappy switch and has the same problem with the same photocopy. his post was almost identical to mine. thanks very much, stuart, looks like it'll fly -- I'll know in the morning.
When I first read that post, I thought maybe it was you until I noticed it was a year old. Makes you wonder how many other people got the same crummy instruction sheet.
I just tried to get it going, managed to get the fan running but only one speed .
busted a connector off the back of the switch -- I'm just going to take it back to graingers and raise hell.
2 speed switch
Did you ever find out how to wire this switch? I bought one this morning at grainger and the wiring istructions are ridiculous. I have a black white and red wire.
