I currently have a fireplace with an inert in my livingroom. I would like to know if I can add a wood burning stove in my dining room on the wall behind the fireplace using the same chimney as the fireplace for exhaust.

More and more cities are not allowing new wood burners or FP to be installed. A call to your Building department is in order.

You can't share flues.
I don't know just exactly why, but I know it's not kosher.
the definitive no is for sharing solid fuel with oil or gas fired appliances. It may be definite in some places for all too.But in some places, for same fuel, it depends on all the variables of the flue and flow formulas

I believe it's pretty universal at this piont to not allow two woodburning devices on one flue. The reason for ( someone was wondering before) is the possibility of smoke backing
up and exiting into the other thimble and smoking out the house. Often
considered a needless worry but it could happen.
In genral that is true. You just have to understand the basis for a rule to know what the exceptions are. 99/100 you are right.1/100 might be this case - which is why I asked questions before giving the shotgun answer.

That's what I thought too. I was just wondering who was hiding behind a new moniker in the name of making a political point.

I'm not hiding! This is Henley. My PC crashed and I'm using another temporarily.
I had to sign in again and am hoping to get my name back when I

I forgot to say I hope you get the computer thing resolved and are able to save your old information.
Buying a computer is full of choices and new information. And trying to intergrate the old information into the new machine.
Last 2 computers we have gotten used from my SIL ( an accountant).
Got a price from a computer store for $1,700 fully loaded and supported.
My son got a new computer from Walmart for $500-600. Very little software.
Choices, choices

You can sign in from any machine you want to - just use your screen name and password correctly.. I have logged in here from about five or six different machines.

Not as a general rule.
How big is the flue?
How is the insert installed? Does it have a liner pipe for it's exhast or dump straight to the clay flue?
How tall is the chimney?
