Hi all,
I have a fella that wants me to build him a new countertop for the vanity in his bathroom. The walls are all T&G cedar and he would like something to compliment the cedar on the walls. Was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on what type of wood would be a wise choice, and any pros and cons to a wood countertop in a “wet area”. Also some tips on the finishing of the wood would be great. I’ve been searching online and looking for some books but as of yet have’nt found any worthwhile info. Thanks so much.

In my opinion, the only acceptable finish for a wood countertop in a bathroom would be marine epoxy. (Regardless of the species selected.)
As to the species, it would depend heavily on what kind of cedar was on the walls. If it's red cedar, I might try something with Padauk -- a very orangy-looking hardwood.
Unless you're the lead dog, the view just never changes.
Try http://www.brookswood.com or http://www.spekva.com both fabricate wooden tops for kitchen and bath. We have used wooden tops on several projects. Pricey, but classy. We have a teak top on display in our showroom 1-9/16 thick with big ogee. It looks great, and has a oil finish. As with all wood tops, your customer better truly love them, because they are work.
In my own home I have a cherry vanity top with clear finish (catalyzed varnish?) from custom cabinet manufacturer. I have a self rimming sink, and it's been in use for about 1 year. Top looks great, just have to sneak in there after company to make sure they didn't leave any standing water. Otherwise no problems at all.
Don't be afraid, just do it!

Thanks for links tbkapp will check them out.
Hey Tbkapp,
Just wanted to know what you meant by the wood countertop being alot of work? Do they require alot of maintenance? If so , how often? Thanks-great links.
"A lot of work" meaning if you choose an oil finish, you need to keep up with maintenance by re-applying oil a couple times per year, and no matter what finish, be vigilant about wiping up spills.
I was always a skeptic on wooden tops, until an old timer told me that rich people have had them in their homes forever. Like I said earlier, we have educated our customers and put a couple in the field with no complaints.
