Everyone,
I’m restoring an 100+ year old timberframe barn that’s seen better days. Anyway, at one time previous owners turned the bottom floor into a garage (the barn used to be an old carriage barn). They poured concrete floors that have about a 1.5-2 inch drop over about 17 feet. I’m converting the barn into my woodworking shop and would like to put a insulated wood floor down over the concrete. I have a few ideas, but I would like to see what ya’ll had to say about leveling the floors. Thanks.
Regards,
David

One of many possibilities - Frame it up with 2x4's, 16 OC. For a larger space, you'll get better results if you can get a good long level in there. I'd use a laser if you had one and find the highest and lowest points. Reference off the high point, where wood will contact everything tight. Everywhere else, shim it. I just did this in three rooms about two months ago. We put 2x2 pressure treated sleepers down to the concrete with gun nails. The 2x4's went on top and we shimmed between the two. Kept the shims from moving by stapling them in place on either side of the point where they contacted. That being said, we didn't have to make up two inches, which complicates things a little. You could accomplish essentially the same thing in the bigger divots with wood you ripped on a table saw. If you try to keep it neat, you'll have plenty of room to insulate things under the flooring. Time consuming. I saw it done once where the guy scribed 2x4s to the floor across the whole basement. Worked good, but seems like entirely too much effort for me.
Another gee whiz idea, I've also seen wood shops where all the dust collection was routed into the floor to get it out of the way. All those runs aren't climbing up next to the machines in the middle. The downside, access, was addressed by having the floor such that a 16" wide piece could be removed by pulling a couple of screws in the event that the collector lines got jammed up.

Thanks for the great reply RW. I was thinking of scribing and ripping 2x's to make up the slope, but I like some of the other ideas you present. I do have a rotary laser level which makes the job a whole lot easier. Take care.....
