I have just purchased a new home. The vinyl windows have drywall returns with a painted wood sill. I want to trim the windows with wood returns and casing. Is it feasible to just remove the existing sill and install the new wood returns over top of the drywall? What are the cons doing this? What steps should I take to do this?

You can trim over the drywall returns, however, the corner bead that's on the return may be sloped on the wall. IThe trim may not come out properly, that is, it may be angled on the wall.
Suggest removing the drywall and then casing the windows.
i would definitely remove the drywall returns and the corner bead. first of all the new returns will fit into the slot on the window(might have to use 1/2 inch material also the corner bead will prevent the casing from lying flat on the wall
The only place it is a problem is at your mitres. Just slip a shim at the corner. I have done this a few times. when everything is caulked and painted, you can't tell the difference. The only problem is if you are installing a window stool and the window pull is too low. If it is going to be picture framed, it is not a problem.
