I am a DIY’er looking for insight on installation of wood siding. In comparing horizontal siding vs. board-and-batten it seems that horizontal (using thin vertical nailing strips) allows for much better water drainage between the siding and the house wrap. We really want board and batten, but I haven’t found a way to provide a similar gap behind the vertical boards (i.e. horizontal nailing strips) that won’t interfere with water drainage.
We live in a high wind area (mountains of CO), so I count on the fact that water will make it beyond the siding to the house wrap, which is why I am very interested in allowing for drainage.
On a related note, someone told me that OSB won’t work as sheathing behind board and batten, I need to use plywood. I think it had something to do with giving the siding nails something to get a purchase in. Any thoughts?
