I’m doing as-built drawings for a client in Berkley California. He’s planning to remodel. The house is fairly old (I’d guess early to mid 20th century). I was surprised to discover most of the walls were only 2 3/4″ thick from the outside face of the horizontal siding to the inside face of the plaster. There have been some changes made to the house but what I can piece together from the construction it looks like the walls are comprised of 1 1/8″ vertical boards sandwiched between the outside horizontal wood siding and the inside plaster (probably secured to the vertical wood boards with metal lathe?). That’s it for the exterior structural wall support! No studs that I can see at all. the house is a simple gable about 24′ wide and up in the attic the rafters are 2×3 rafters with a strut at the mid span of each rafter. Can anyone tell me more about this method of construction or tell me of some literature or resource that could tell me more about this? What do you call this type of construction? Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!

Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.
