Construction “techniques” are not exactly what I am looking for, even though they will eventually surface in the discussion.
But I am putting out this a.p.b. to see if anyone can come up with some ideas on what to do about woodpeckers pecking through cedar lap-siding, and basically destroying the siding of a house.
The siding, after 20 yr., is in such bad shape that it has to be replaced.
The house belongs to my mother (but she is not living in it).
Ideally, I would like to repair all of the damage, which is basically one entire side of the house, with the same kind of material and construction, and get rid of the birds.
But… the birds are not easily deterred. Not even dummy-owls scare them off–? and where can you purchase a real owl, or bird-of-prey, and for how much money, and how many will you have to buy before one stays in the neighborhood?
So my mother, instead of listening to me, is checking into replacing the wood siding on the entire house, with Hardiplank siding.
For whatever reasons, I think that is a bad idea, given our situation.
And we cannot go with aluminum or vinyl, because of the style of all of the other houses in the neighborhood (they were built in the 70’s, and are all brick or wood siding)
The construction is just 2X Rakes and Fascia brds., and 1X (?) cornerboards, I think. With 8″ (?) beveled cedar siding, and some vertical-brd&batten siding.
Any good suggestions for deterring the birds–a tried, true, and tested, method–, or, suggestions for new durable wood siding material to use???
