I am building new cabinets for two bathrooms and a laundry room. We are haveing a hard time deciding on counter top material. I made laminated maple tops for our kitchen and we love them. Once in a while we wipe them down with mineral oil and that’s it for maintanence. Could I use teak or some other wood for the wetter bathroom counters? Ipe, perhaps? What would be best? What kind of glue is best for oily hardwoods? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Jim

Jim, by all means IPE is great...IF you have the gumption to deal with its nature.
Gumption is defined as............
Good knowldege of basic wood working
A serious investment in well maintained/sharpened tools
Clamps..never too many
Patience and a willing ness to listen ( not to me, your S.O.)
A strong will, to forfiet the S.O> when things go awry the FIRST TIME ( cuz the chances are this won't be yer last chance at this)
Happy attitude, plyed with knowledgeable advice..
OK..we covered that part.
Buy a jointer..( if yoy must ask, stop now, buy a prefab)
Buy a table saw ( see above)
Buy a belt sander ( seee above)
Buy a palm R/O sander ) you get this yet?)
Buya bunch of dust masks, amd while yer at it..a whole house dust collecter..
This is about where a divorce atty is beneficial..an a big box of bandaids..( cloth ones, cuz we are MEN>>Dammiit)
Glue..ya need that stuff...get it by the gallon..but gawdawlmighty do not spill it anywhere "She" will see it..( I have a special place to spill my glue, she can't ever find it, it's called a 'workbench'..shhhshh)
A very expensive and seldom used "TURBO-AIRE, MK11111vvvvxxxx1111ccccwwwww, ( more roman numerals than ben hurs remake) and a 50.00 off coupon!! Who who...resparaters..ok,,thems too..( gotta have at least 2, the first one NEVER works..like it should)..ok? geared up?
Cutta the wooda! opps..( it's OK, WE ALL MAKE BOO BOO'S)
Cell phone..trust me..speed dial for the divorce atty...and your next to best friend..( trust me again on that, your Best friend is upstairs doing your wife, while you explore the finer points of tourniquets)..the atty will call 911..FOR YOU///how sweet of him..
Ok ya with me so far? Use the big yellow book..yeah..that one..to wrap the severd digit..and find the duct tape in the newlt created sawdust...stare VERY INTENTLY at the now not bleeding wound...heavea sifg to whomever ya heave sighs to...and go deal with the wife and "gringo".....
About that time, the atty. oughtta be parking in your garage ( with his own "thingy" to make it work)..and uncreasing his Fiore Viante tripple deck pinstripe suit..
As yout NEXT TO BEST FRIEND arrives..you go into appolectic shock..heart arythymyias..you knoe just like A MINUTE A GO......
Cell phone..911, they come, they tell her you are a crip for life, she marries the guy in the fire truck..an you, have most of your tools left..except..for the jointer...

Jim,
Ignore the man behind the curtain...
Teak works quite well for wet areas.
If you want to simply glue up planks edge-to-edge, then look for vertical grain teak at the yard. You could edge glue, for example, three 8" wide planks, or four 6" planks to get a 24" deep countertop.
Or you could go fo r a butcher block look, but that required much more cutting, sanding, etc, etc.
To glue, first wipe down the edges to be glued with acetone. This will remove some of the oily residue. Wait a bit, then use a 2-part epoxy to butter the edges of the boards. When edge-glueing teak planks, I also use biscuits.
Now, unlike yellow glue, the epoxy isn't absorbed by the biscuit which in turn causes the biscuit to swell and lock the two pieces together...I simply use the biscuit almost like a floating tenon. Butter the biscuit with epoxy and slide it into the slot.
After the epoxy has cured, I belt sand the top.
Done.
Mineral oil, several applications over a few days, to all sides of the countertop. The oil will be sensitive to water at first (might get water spotting), but after a few weeks the countertop will be just fine.
