Mary,
Are the scratches into the wood or just in the finish. How many and how bad. You could rescreen your floor and put a new finish on it. Its a pretty straight fwd project. I feel if you screen in just the areas that the scratches are located you might end up with "phantom" marks on your floors where the touch up has been. how bad and how many scratches are we talking?
*I'm anxious to hear from the Poly choir on this - with an oil finish, you wipe the areas with a oily rag and the scratches disappear -
*Ron,The scratches are just in the polyurethane. The wood itself is not scratched. There are about a dozen or so small scratches in an area of approx. 2 x 2 ft.
*Dogs?Inside of door?I would try this first before screening and top coating: Use rubbing oil on a rag. If you use poly it will leave a lap mark.
*Geez, a question just for me. All you need to do is lightly sand the scratches with 150g sandpaper or finer and then wash down all of the affected boards in full with paint thinner. Dry boards with a towel. Blue tape all of the boards that were scratched in full and then just recoat the boards with the semi gloss poly(stir well). A thin coat. Once coated, carefully pullup the tape and stay off the area for one day. The lustre level might be a little different for a couple of weeks, but it will blend in. Amount of time invested;20 minutes. It really is the less care finish. Water spots removed with just a swipe of a wet cloth; no sprinting for the tung oil and wax. GW
*Greg, it sounds like you're the man to give me some advice. We'll soon be laying a yellow pine floor. We know that it will be easily marred and we're fine with that, but we're having some questions about how to best to finish it. Is there any advantage to applying a tung oil then applying a poly over it? If so, can we use a water-based poly over oil, or do we have to stick with oil-based? My husband wants a tung oil finish ONLY, but I don't think that it would be enough protection in case the dog throws up and it sits there all night. I don't mind character marks, but don't want white spots. I'd appreciate your opinion.
