You go into a spec-built place, it’s all tricked out in good-looking finishes.
All the doors are outfitted with this little Baldwin number.
EXCEPT! The escutcheon plate, that nice looking thing with the crown, has been mounted upside down. Plumb, straight, true, but upside down. The levers are as you see, but the plate is rotated 180.
Now, let’s imagine you don’t know the Baldwin line of hardware, and have not seen this before. Your only frame of reference is what you are seeing on the doors. Crown to the bottom.
Does it look wrong to you? Does it bother you?

I've had problems with Baldwin here in Japan. I know its an expensive product, but I think they could do a lot better in a lot of areas. Their screws strip really easily, their directions are not very in-depth, and I've had lots of packages with parts missing! Its frustrating when you are in North America and have to order more parts, etc., imagine what its like when you have to order them from another country!! Baldwin's products get an A+ on looks, but much lower grades elsewhere as far as I'm concerned.

Hey. I've seen actual crown installed upside down. Dental, at that.
Bother me? Yeah.
But not surprising.

If the one writing the check says they prefer it upside down...
upside down it is...Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!

Interesting....I was expecting to see some f'd up faux McMansion....that house looks pretty old. Maybe there was more there, I& it rotted away?
The house is old, but the dentil was added at some later date. Looks like it originally had an entryway.

They are inside this project. A spec venture, seeking buyers.
Seven condo units, probably around ten doors per, total 70 sets of upside-down.

Make it right and turn them around, unless it would show some scratches or holes from the wrong installation.Otherwise you know what is going to happen: 2 years down the road another contractor walks in the building and sees all the wrong escutcheon plates and ask who installed them? The answer is going to be: "It was done by this Gene Davis guy, I wonder what else he did wrong".So spend the time and fix your mistake, sh#t happens...Martin

I don't recall Gene saying he did it.
"I never met a man who didn't owe somebody something."
You are rightIf it was done by Gene than he should fix it, if it was done by another contractor don't worry about it.Martin
Did I say I did it?
I'm just there to do the kitchens. Right side up.
does it affect the performance? If not.............I don't see an issue.

At least they were consistent. But do you seriously think the HO's are going to notice? I tend to think they're going to walk in and say, "Wow, look at those granite countertops....look at those SS appliances! Look at that tile in the MBA! Look at those big windows! Look at that hot tub! Where's my checkbook!"

You're right. So, just dangle a big "hardware by Baldwin" price tag off the first one in each unit and write the price on the back. They'll be lining up to buy those upside downers.
If I'm the one who unknowingly installed them upside down, it would be bug me enough to spend the time to fix them.
If someone else installed them, it would still bug me (a lot) but I aint' changing a thing unless someone was paying me.
Heck, I think those would look better "upside down" from a natural mass perspective, but then I've never much been a fan of dogma. By the way, isnt that porch roof "upside down" too, or is it a trick of the lens?

I can imagine situations where the plates would be right in either orientation, although if everything else is equal having it right side up is better.
For instance, if there is crown and other trim that flairs at the top, the plate definitely looks best right side up.
On the other hand if there are architectural details, or even furniture, with outsweeping "legs" and/or rounded tops such as arched doors and a lack of crown, then the plates would look somewhat wrong with the crown side up.

It just looked ugly to me; I looked at the picture first. When I read it was upside down, well, that explained the ugly.
Yeah, it would bother me to look at it or to live in it. But it wouldn't keep me from buying the condo; I'd just probably be idiot enough to think they were ugly rather than installed upside down. Then, when I got the money, I'd change them all out.
I'm with you, I think they look better upside down.BTW, the one in the picture is right side up. (|:>)SamT

So right you are! Didn't get that. SO, they're incorrectly installed correctly. At least to the aesthetically sensitive eye.

Microsoft bought Baldwin ?
A friend is a person that knows everything about you and still likes you.
If I had no idea or never seen the proper installation I'm guessing I MIGHT think it looks a bit odd, but probably not enough so to comment on
If i'm paying Baldwin prices and its wrong I now have something to do all morning......i'm screaming on the phone.
I'm not perfect and dont ask for perfection but I am expected to deliver what I promise to my best ability and when I fail I pay.
