I’ve heard about little brass disks with numbers on them to match wooden screens to the windows they fit. They came in pairs of the same number; one was tacked to the screen frame, and one to the window frame. Does anyone know where to get them if they’re still made, or what they are called so I can search for them?

We use what are referred to as valve tags at work. You can get them blank from
http://www.mcmaster.com/ and stamp them yourself. McMaster also has numbered stamp sets.

There are several sets of them for sale on eBay right now, go there and do a search on 'window tacks'. Apparently they were made by a company named Acro.
WE had those on the screen of my house when I was a kid....
Same disc and matching # on the storms as well.
How I hated the dreaded announcement it was time to switch the storms for screen and vice versa. 3 story house, full screen porch , take them down , wash , get the replacements out of storage, wash and install, store the others till the next dreaded day coming in 6 months. And God help you if you damaged the screen fabric or broke the glass.
Now if you can find an old fashioned hardware store in a part of the country that used to use storms and screens you might just find some on a dusty shelf at the back of the store, up high , left hand side.
They will be by the storm sash locking side supports that were used to keep the storms open on mild days in the spring.

Used to be available at any decent hardware store. Probably not anymore, though, since wood screens disappeared with the Edsel.
