We have a standing seam metal roof here at the winery that every year we have to pressure wash off what looks like black mold. I read once sometime ago in one of the issues that a zinc strip on the ridges helps prevent this from growing.
Has anyone had any experience with doing this? What gauge? How pure a zinc strip/flashing? Where do you get the stuff? Any help at all?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark - click here and here too for more information - this application is more typically used for moss control on CAB or wood shingles.
Metal roofs don't usually support black mold growth - are you sure it isn't just dirt / pollution / etc.?

*Mark --- I'm going to take some wild guesses. If you're a winery with a metal roof, maybe you're in California. And if you're in California, maybe the trees growing around the winery are bay trees. If all of the above is true, the way to get rid of the black yuck is to apply a belt of a product named something like Tanglefoot to the trunks of the bay trees. Tanglefoot is a waxy/tarry stuff that stops ants from climbing trees. It is generally used on fruit trees. You get it at garden-supply stores. The ants are climbing the tree to harvest honey that aphids produce. The ants also protect the aphids from their usual predators like lady bugs. The black mold on your roof is a fungus that also grows on the aphid honey. Cut the ants off from the aphids, and predators clear out the infestation. If you want to speed the process, get a few bags of lady bugs at the same garden center. This all sounds astonishing, but it does work. Jamie
