Unlike fireplaces and low-mass wood stoves, masonry heaters produce heat long after the fire has died down, thanks to high thermal mass that soaks up energy heat as it’s produced and gently radiates it for many hours. Hess is tinkering with the idea of building one himself from plans he’s located online.
Is this type of heater the right choice given his building plans? And is making one of these heaters really feasible? Those questions are the basis of this week’s Q&A Spotlight.
Hess hears from people who have used, and loved, masonry heaters. But they wonder whether such an appliance would produce far more heat than Hess really needs, turning his house into a Finnish sauna. A high efficiency wood stove might be more suitable for Hess’ building plans, and come at a lower price.
More to the point, Hess learns, building a masonry heater is probably beyond the skills of an average amateur mason.
