When I was a full-time carpenter more than 20 years ago, I installed a lot of Andersen windows. I never saw anyone flash them right. In fact, it’s only been in the last decade or so that knowledge of the need for window and door flashing has become mainstream. Yet I still rarely see it done or done right. I’m guessing that Andersen was seeing the same things that I was, because the company now sells an installation kit. It includes a length of Tyvek FlexWrap for flashing the sill, and some peel-and-stick membrane for the sides and top of the window. Also included are plastic shims, fasteners, flexible foam backer rod for air-sealing between the window and the framing, and instructions. The cost is around $50 for a single-window kit and $60 for a sliding-door kit—much cheaper than the cost of fixing rotten framing.
