Hello-
I need to break up a small cinder block wall to get at some plumbing. I also need a new 1/2″ drill. I seem to recall a recent FH tool-test article on 1/2″ hammer drills, particularly ones that can shift from hammer drill to regular drill, but I can’t seem to find it in the pile of recent issues or online.
It’s also possible I read the article in Tools of the Trade magazine…
It’s also possible I dreamed it up…
Any help on finding the article?
Any personal suggestions?
Thanks- John

A Bosch Bulldog or Makita Pit Bull will take you to the next level. They have a chipping mode which will whip up on CMU's. I have the Bulldog and the next bigger one. I had to take out a 3' wide doorway in 8" block.
Could have cut with saw but did not want to make that much dust in my two basements that I was creating a door between.
A suggestion, perhaps?
If you want a new drill, buy one. If you are needing a concrete block or solid wall, get (even rent) a rotary hammer. You will be MUCH happier, and more productive.Quality repairs for your home.

Thanks.
After some research yesterday, this is the drill I'm considering. Truth is, I have enough drills (almost). I have a bunch of cordless Makitas, a cordless impact driver, and a 3/8" holeshooter. Those get me thru 99% of what I do, but I need a 1/2" mostly just for my hole saws. I've been getting by using the 3/8" adapter, but it's not the way to go. So I thought of this drill for the occasional use in concrete and the more frequent but still occasional use with my hole saws.

BTW, I'm no longer full-time in construction. I am a full-time dad and a part-time home remodeler, so my tools get a lot less use these days which makes me think the drill above should do the trick at a decent price (only $80 for a recon)...
unless someone talks me out of it. I'm still open to more suggestions and thank you.

I seem to recall that article as well...I don't think you dreamed it up. I think it's not that recent, maybe a couple years old.
Tools of the Trade, maybe the June issue.
Thanks to all for the input.
I've been thru 2 years worth of FH and Tools of the Trade, all I found was a TOTT article on D-handle rotary hammers which is probably the article, just not about the smaller 1/2" drills as I'd remembered it.
Next stop, Amazon to read the reviews and go from there.
Thanks- John
was this the article?

thank you. It is what I was talking about, but still not the article I recall. Again, I think I am remembering it wrong and this or the D-handle article in TOTT was the article I am remembering, just incorrectly.
Thanks for finding it.
