Hello,
I’m having a new water supply line put in to my residence. The house was built in 1926 and the old galvanized pipe has very poor flow. One of the three bids I got listed 1 1/4″ wirsbo pipe as opposed to the 1″ proposed by the other two bidders. I plan to add a third bathroom to the house eventually and they told me 1 1/4″ is required. Does anyone know what I need? 1 1/4″ seems like overkill.
Thanks!

I have 3/4" supply to my house. If you turn one fawcet full open the others will drop off in flow. I don't mind though.
I think 1" should be fine.
3/4 copper is pretty standard for service from the city.
Are all bids for PEX? Are you comparing apples to apples?
they told me 1 1/4" is required
Not that I know of, but what do I know?
Unless it's a 1000' run, the cost shouldn't be much different & the bigger the better would be my choice.
My opinion is worth what you paid, but there it is.

They all bid it with wirsbo, aka Pex. Seems to be what people use these days.
1" is fine but you may benefit by putting an expansion tank (AKA Wellextrol tank) where the pipe splits to feed the water heater to help keep the pressure balanced as the various flows increase and decrease during usage.

What size is your water meter? Do you really get more water if you install a larger pipe than the outlet on the meter?
I don't know how big the water meter is. But I'm thinking maybe I should call the city and see what the code is.
