Will I notice a difference and will they last as long? 18″ with 5 1/2″ exposure. Thanks.

the exposure is fine ( 5.5" )
for sidewall, we usually use # 1 Perfections , rebutted & resquared ( R&R )
the grain is straighter...
#2 will tend to move & curl more than #1, not as bad as the potatoe chip effect of white cedar, but not as stable as #1 Perfections
so, i'd say they will not have the same life as a #1Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Nevermind - I see it in the title - sidewalls.
I never use #2 for roofing, but for walls it is usually OK. The butts that aare exposed are still clear so the appearance is the same as #1 most of the time.Knots and other flaws are up in the laid over portion of each shingle

thanks for the reply. i already applied tyvek, can i put the shingles directly over it, or do i need toput up kraft paper first as someone else suggested?
Putting cedar shingles over Tyvek is done all the time here. I prefer to use tarpaper, due to the questions regarding the deterioation of Tyvek caused by cedar and moisture (or something like that.)
If you are able, it's more recommended, however, to use a water shedding membrane, such as Rain Slicker, between the shingles and the Tyvek. This allows moisture to drain down.
