Most likely, If you intend to paint them you might want to spray them with a coat of shellac to prevent bleed thru of knots prior to painting them. Or paint them with Kilz of some other sealant type paint
the #2 red label don't have any knots the first 11". the difference between #1 and #2 are 1's are 100% edgegrain, 100% heartwood, 100% clear. #2 limited sapwood and flatgrain are allowed. at 5 1/2" they shouldn't cup, right
You get a better shingle with #1, they are wider and straighter grained. They go up a little faster with hardly any fitting. That being said, I used plain #3s on my place, didn't have any money 25 yrs. ago. I washed, bleached and used a clear preservative on them this summer, after years of neglect. They look almost new and I haven't had any issues with the "shim" shingle grade. I stretched the exposure a little far, too!
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
That looks darn good for what it is and how old it is.

Here is the before, picture. I love natural cedar shingles. Even if I do nothing, they look fairly good. Clean them up and they look new.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
