Is it not possible to download from the IRS website the 1099’s that I need to fill out and send subcontractors?

I don't believe they can be downloaded - but they can be ordered via internet.
Or if you have waited too long, you can buy them at a office supply store.

I think they're included in the TurboTax cd.

No, 1099's must be original, like 1098's, 5305-SEP, etc. They may not be downloaded or reproduced.
You can order them via mail or a 1-800 number at the following IRS web site

any office supply store has them ... fairly cheap ... plus the envelopes needed.
btw ... ya don't have to type them ... hand printed is fine.
hand printed on the last day they have to be post marked inside the van parked at the mailbox is fine too ... just remember the stamps ...

Thanks guys. I think I'll drop by the Staples/Office Max/Office Depot this morning.
One more question - I've got several subs that I used for that I used for little jobs for less than $600 as well as a couple of incorporated folks. Am I correct in that I don't have to send them 1099's, but I can deduct their expenses from my taxes?
Sure they can be downloaded. Here's the link.

The trouble comes when submitting to the IRS. The forms must me in red scanable format. Maybe you should just order from the IRS or Office Depot. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

Incredibly frustrating and stupid, isn't it?! I downloaded the 1099-Misc and then read the front page about how you actually can't use it. So, I called the IRS and ordered the forms I need, but why on earth can't they just make the downloadable forms usable???????? Don't forget to get W-2 and W-3 also.
The technical reason that you can't download the IRS forms is that the scanners the IRS uses are incredibly ancient. The red on the form has to be a certain exact color so that it won't produce false responses. Color printers don't have good enough color control to reproduce that red accurately.
The IRS has botched several computer modernization programs to the tune of billions (yes that is a B). Someday we will be able do all this on the internet, but don't expecte it soon.

That is true, however, they can't scan my hand written ones on official forms either. And when you need to press hard for the 5 copies (on W-2) you don't end up with good easy to read print either. For the typical low volumne user (the large volumne ones have to electronic file anyway) they would be better off allowing computer generated forms.Just like tax returns.
The IRS now allows black and white W-2s. We file all of our paperwork electroniclly.
Does anyone print them out from Quickbooks?
I'm sure there is a way to do it, I just haven't before. Do you need to order special forms or are the standard forms sufficient?
