120v & 240v sharing the same box
Outside location in a weather proof box. Is it legal to use the same outside box for 1 receptical with 120 and the other 240? No pigtails, I ran 2 separate circuits from the panel to each outlet via underground conduit.
The reason I ask is I can’t find anything that says it’s illegal, yet I couldn’t find a cover/door that would allow this arrangement. I ended up hogging out one side for the 120v outlet.
Thanx

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.

There are combination duplex outlets on the market. One outlet is 220 and the other 110. I've always powered the 110 side from one leg of the 220 line, but it could be hooked to a separate cable.

I ran a separate feed for the 120 because the 240 is a dedicated circuit for a pool pump and is controlled by a timer. I did check with 2 local suppliers and they didn't know of anything that would work for what I wanted. They did show me some options but I passed. I didn't bother to google for it because I wanted to finish it up this past weekend, which I did. As long as it's legal it works for me.
Here's what the setup looked like and it allows the pump to be plugged in and not hard wired. It's supposed to be safe for wet locations too. The 120 hole I hogged out is on the leftI've upped my standards...so up yours
I don't know if code requires it, but I always prefer to have the breakers ganged so that all the electricity to the outlet box gets turned off at the same time. I don't want to pull the breaker on that 220 outlet and open up the box to find that the 110 is still live.Neat work on that outlet cover.George Patterson, Patterson Handyman Service.
Good point! thanks
The breakers are next to each other, but I'll maker a mental note of it and also attach a tag to shut off both prior to service. I've upped my standards...so up yours
