I have been drooling over a staiway I have been wanting to build extra badly. Its a good challenge…..and I just love building these things. I occasionally do straight stairs…but try to mainly stick with these curved ones.
Anyway…just got the green light for this one…and what a send off to Florida. I wanted that hook set in this big fish so bad before I left.
I will post some pictures soon of the rough hole I have to fill with a stairway. It was designed for a 180 degree circular stairway but….like I see many times…not enough room. I have to design an elliptical stairway that will fit in this too shallow of a foyer. I am taking my elliptical drawing jig down to layout the exterior curved wall….and then be able to reproduce this in my shop.
This stairway will have American cherry treads, newels and railing. The risers and skirtboards will be pickled maple. The balusters are in iron. . The balcony has a curved widow walk section.
I have another curved stairway to build along with it…and two straight ones as well at the same time. I had better clone myself because I do not work weekends or much after 3:30. I have to make time for the gyrocopter. <G>
I am not getting independent….I have been this way all my life. I am enjoying building these curved stairways as much as ever…and could work 24/7 building them if my health allowed. But you know what? I would much rather enjoy life more making less money…..than just chasing the dollar. That game is seldom won.

They say a carpenter is only good as hi last set of stairs
Have a great vacation Stan, looking forward to seeing your posts on this one. Oh by the way, in the land of the self-employed tradspeople, if you don't work weekends or past 3;30 you are on vacation every day.
Stan,
I think that you should show up at the jobsite in your Gyrocopter. How cool would that be.
