1880’s farmhouse renovation – dormers?
Hello,
I’m planning on renovating an 1880’s farmhouse near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I was wondering if there are any contractors in the area with experience in renovating these old farmhouses?
I also wanted to know if anyone has ever put dormers on a house from the 1880’s. I know how to technically frame and build a dormer – my questions about the type and style of dormer that would be respectful to the architecture of the house. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Anthony

We cannot offer much without some pictures of you house. Got a digital camera?
There are threads about framing dormers try an advanced search.
You might see a dormer you like in the Architectural Feature of the Day thread in the Photo Gallery folder. That is if you have some free time.

Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, big wheel turn by the grace of god.
The dormers should take their cue from the windows in the house and perhaps should have somewhat smaller dormers (but not always). Roof pitch should complement the main roof - if it's a (typically) steeper Victorian pitch like 12/12 the dormer roofs should be in the same ballpark.
Usually dormers are located with regard to elevation elements below - in early (Colonial and Federal) periods they were often aligned with windows below.

Typically old Ontario farmhouses had one center dormer over the upstairs hallway. I'll try to take a picture of mine tomorrow.
