At that time early 80s – was it common to have the doorbell “all in one box-where the chime is” or did they have remote power supply transformers?
My attic is full of insulation- probably will never find the doorbell transformer if it has one.

Yes, it would be common to have a transformer.
If not by the load center then most likely in the attic near the bell or in the crawlspace near the bell.
But it could be most anyplace. If done by code it should be "accessible". That means that it can be gotton to with nothing other than a screw driver.
But if it wasn't don't by code or remudling since them ....
Ya got a basement? Most transformers i've seen for doorbells have been on the outside of just about any constant "hot" junction box you can think of.
Shouldn't be that hard to find, good luck.
