Hi everyone,
I’m installing 2cm (3/4″) granite countertops in our kitchen. Some companies recommend a 5/8″ subtop, and others a 3/4″ subtop. The contractor we are mainly considering recommends the 5/8″, and requests that the subtop be recessed back about 1/8-1/4″ from the faceframe of the cabinets. The laminate of the granite will rest on the faceframe, and he states that the adhesive will add thickness which will raise make up the difference in thinkness between the subtop and the laminate. Does this sound correct? I’m just trying to imagine how thick or how much adhesive must be used to accomplish 1/8″ thickness. Or, should I consider someone who recommends using a 3/4″ subtop?
Another question I have is whether there is an article on constructing subtops. I will be doing this myself, and I think the trickiest part will be the sink, which is an undermount sink. Does anyone know of an article or have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Ryan

Been a cabinet maker for 20+ years and that is the standard(5/8") for the granite manufactures that I worked with.
Either is fine. The epoxy glues they use typically do add a strong 1/16th to an 1/8th.
