If one were to put in a second story 5’X5′ shower/toilet combo with a shower drain in the middle oof the floor, how would you waterprooof it?
It is new construction(Ijoists and t+g osb); fiberglass lead or rubber membrane? and thickset morter or durock? wouldn’t so it? – why not?
Thanks

Krista, You have several options for your shower pan. You can build you own forming the pan with a dry pack mortar mix. Or you can build the pan from wood and durorock. Either way, you need to use any of the waterproofings available. Then you tile your pan and seal the tile with an appropriate sealer.
There are numerous products available. I would suggest you talk to a local tile supply and see what they offer.
I am not sure if there are any pre-formed fiberglass showerpans that are that large. A check with your local plumbing supply could set you up in that direction.
I have not seen that type of set-up since traveling through France. I would be curious to hear what your local building code has to say about it.

*Krista,I'm a bit cloudy on trying to visualize a 5' x 5' shower/toilet combo. Does the stool sit inside the shower making for easy cleaning? It would make an interesting shower seat though. However, I just had my shower redone and it's 45" by 48." We choose to have it "hot mopped." The guy carefully positioned heavy roofing paper (requiring the plumber to locate his connections in a certain manner) over the bottom and up the walls a way. He then covered all of this paper with a fairly thick coat of the same hot tar they use on roofs. Dried up nice in an hour or so.On top of this, the tile boys laid a sloping mortar bed then tiled and grouted. But this toilet in the shower of yours is intriguing.
*Had a plumber/friend tell me when considering my own 2nd floor shower "I wouldn't have anything but hot mop in MY home." Went the hot mop route, which is not cheap compared to a folded vinyl liner. After reading info here and at jlc, I'm not convinced that it is really that much better, but what's a couple hundred bucks in the price of a major tile job? At least if it ever leaks I'll know I did the best I could, instead of wondering if I should have spent those few extra$$$.
*Is the closet wall hung or is there a closet flange in the showr pan and drain pipe through the liner? Seems very problematic.
