Guy’s I recently bought an older home 97 years. I had a 2/12 beam three ply running through the centre of my kitchen, On top were two real 2×4 plates putting my beam nearly 15 inches down from the ceiling. The 2×12’s were spanning almost 15 1/2 feet with no point load or any real sign of support underneath. I had planned to shorten my span to just under 12 feet and put in a 3/12inch by 7 1/4″ LSL sistered with an 1 3/4 LSL giving me a total of 5 1/4 thick. Finaly when my new beam was in and the old came out I started to release the screw jacks and started to hear squeaks sure enough there’s 1/4 inch sag in the middle. Currently I’ve got 30 boxes of brazillian cherry right above it weighing atleast 2000 pounds. I hope when the flooring moves the sag will disapears. My question is am I overspanned? I thought I’d have no trouble maybee I have to sandwich one more LSL on and strap my wall to a 2×8. Any thoughts would be apprecieated. Thanks

For a few bucks and peace of mind have a professional come in and evaluate your load requirements. It appears you just winged it and now you are not sure if what you replaced the original beam with is correct.
A 7.25" beam shouldn't be spanning 12'.
And we don't really know what else the thing is carrying besides the lumber you mentioned.
Like someone already said - You need someone to come out and evaluate the situation.
a: why did you do this ?
b: why do you have a 2000 lb. object temporarily placed on top of an area where you are making a serious structural modification ?

I'm gutting the house the hardwood needs to be put somewhere. There has always been a beam there. My new beam was six inches behind existing so I was never in danger. Darwin's only apply to americans :p
You are right about Darwin awards... In some countries it is considered honorable to kill yourself. Not sure what they think about peeing on high tension lines though... Matt
Yeah, what Tim said!
