Replacing the porch on our house- I plan for: 2 x 6 joists, mounted with hangers to the house to extend perpendicularly 8′ to rest on a beam running parallel (sp?) to the house, which in turn rests in post anchors in piers on footings- Was that a run-on sentence? My question: Are these 2×6’s spaced 16″o/c adequate to the task? No other weight on the deck surface, the posts for the roof will rest directly on the beam- If it’s marginal, and if it will help, I can block between the joists- Nope, there’s no building code covering this in our county, and there will be no inspections- Just want it sturdy- Thanks for your thoughts- Dave

Dave,
I don't know what species you would be using, but according to my span tables, a spruce-pine-fir #3 grade can span 7'6" with a 40 psf live load, but jumps to 9'4" with a #2 grade. Around here we would use pressure treated for a porch floor frame, and that would be SYP species.
Those spans are greater yet, so you should be ok.
Many thanks- Around here it's usually 2&better fir & tamarack- What I'm about to do is what I've always done, which anymore, makes it suspect- Thanks for sharing with me- Dave
Dave, what type of flooring are you installing?Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

I expect to screw down 2x cedar planks- Fir or larch are in the wings if lumber prices keep following oil prices-
Not tongue and groove I take it, for if you were using T&G, then you would want to run the flooring for sure perpendicular to the house with a bit of fall so water would drain properly.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Correct- Tthe decision to run the planking parallel to the house was a cosmetic option- Where/what is the Glass City?
Dave, the Glass City is Toledo, Ohio...........site of this years

Since you're a guy who obviously knows, lemme bug you with two more questions- Is there a loss of integrity or anything if I use joist hangers at both ends of the 2x6's, as opposed to laying one end across the beam?
Also, with respect to these sonotubes: Do I simply set one on the dried footing and fill it up, or should I set it in the wet footing? Either way, I'll poke a couple rebar out of the footing into the concrete in the tube-
Thanks a lot- Dave
