After seeing the post on the problems with the Makita LXT drills as well as my MXT losing 3rd gear, I was wondering if things were better of with just 2 speeds? Does anyone know if theDewalt XRP’s with the 3 speeds have had any problems with losing/stripping gears?
I’m becoming a little gun shy of the 3 speed drills!

would there be any benefit to 3 speeds over 2 speeds on a drill?
Bubbajames..
the larger the diameter of the drill bit the slower it should spin, too fast a speed will cause the bit to burn out. Too slow and with a smaller bit it takes too long to drill a hole.. three speeds would simply allow for a closer fit between the drilling speed and the maximum size bit that will operate at that speed..

I never really thought about it but I guess that makes sense if you consider that larger drill bits spin at a higher feet-per-second. That is the reason, isn't it?
I don't have any problems with my three speed Dewalt, but thats jsut one opinion. I don't have any problems with my old two speed compact either.
I've got the Spinal Tap drill. It has eleven speeds.
