I did like to ask about installing hardwood flooring… A good buddy of mine showed me his work on putting down the 3/4 thick oak flooring at a 45 degrees. He says he had to start in the middle centered of the room then work both ways out from there. He says the tongue and groove is going one way then the other is going the other way so he had to cheat by adding a dowel to lock that side. I did like to learn why that’s the way to do it and why not start in the corner and work all the way to the other corner?
Thanks Bluegillman

less waste is one reason.

Start in the center and lay it normally....
Make a spline, glue it into the goove and turn the groove into a tongue.. Now go the other way..
Less waste.
More acurate lay...

WOW!!! What a Ride!
It's way too easy to get way off starting with such small pieces. Starting from a long straight run is much easier. I'm not sure what the dowel deal is. We use a spline (a loose tongue) to change the tongue and groove orientation.
"course that could be what Sphere meant by less waste, I've seen 'em get so far off the diagonal, the whole thing had to be ripped up and laid again. Took 'em three trys on one floor!
Don't worry, we can fix that later!
sorta, I was gettin at that the shorter pcs can go wall to wall as ya approach the corner..rather then slicing up a bunch of wood for the shorties comin outta the corner.
I do the spline too.

Wow, but he laid it just beautifully for a first timer do it yourself.
