First off just venting.
I have a project right now that we are remodeling all 3 bathroom, kitchen and replacing all of the millwork in the house.
Part of the project requires us to remove two partition walls (non- structural)
City has required us to have a Building permit in addition to the plumbing and electrical permits that we have already pulled. They wanted a 3-4 week plan review time frame, which I was able to talk them out of.
The building permit cost 718.00 for removing 2 sections, one about 5 feet long and the other about 9 feet.
Here is the funny part. When the person handing me the permit said the only inspection you will need for the building portion is the final.
I just can’t wrap my head around this. I realize it is just a revenue
tool
Somewhere this has to stop
Thanks for listening

What are your building permit fees based on?
Our's go by the $ value of the project at a certain rate. For a permit to be around $800 the job cost would be around 70,000.00
the total cost of the project is a little over 100,000. But here is the rubIf we were not touching those walls. we could of just gotten over the counter permits for the plumbing and electrical for just a couple of hundred.Frank
You're not the only one.
Permit fees in central Ohio have gone up also. They're trying to make the inspections and reviews as self-sustainable as possible. So much so that one county official said on the website that he strongly disagreed with it, but there wasn't anything he could do.
i would have to agree. Making a business out of permits is bad policy.
Wow. Not sure where you are from. In DE towns you need a lic. and permit for every darn thing. This is how slow it is here. The other week I was in this one town and I was sitting in my truck on a side street doing paperwork. Next thing I know I look in my rear view and 2 blocks back I see a town inspector car watching me. So, I get out of my truck and decide this is a great place to clean up my truck and organize my tools. You know that inspector stayed there the whole time. When I got done and went back to doing my paperwork, he left. Looks like that town should maybe think about lay offs. O yea gov. workers never get laid off they just raise taxes and watch people doing their paperwork. Hehehe! Just venting to.
That's about right for my town, except it's four weeks, and not waivable.
And that they are much less understanding if you insist on "homeowner" permits for plumbing electrical (those are perfectly legal, but not prefered).
Just another tax and a wanting of a "piece of the action!"
What do you get for the money? Really!
Join the club. $1500 and 9 MONTHS later I had my main building permit. 9 months because the idiot at the permit office didn't speak english very well so I ended up having to resubmit my plans three times. Each time she'd point out something new (her english was so bad that I had her write down what she was asking for), and I'd have to go back to my architect for another round of revisions. And of course, what do they do when some is building illegally down the street? Nothing. Permit for the house said 2 stories, but that's odd, they've got three! Called it in and nothing happened. Oh well.

The permit here for our (pretty major) renovation/addition was $5400 plus $3000 Affordable Housing Fee.
Fun huh?
