I’m just finishing my new shop, a small 15′ x 30′ building. I know I should put in a dust system, but it feels too much to deal with right now. I was thinking of using tool dust collectors like Festool has instead of a built-in system. This could work well because I could use the saw with guide and add sander, etc. and not have to have a big cabinet saw in my little shop. Of course, the space is already being coveted by everyone for their hobbies so I expect I’ll need to be able to shove things to the side at times. Does anyone have an opinion about this kind of set-up compared to a standard shop? I am not a pro, but I have waited my whole life to have a shop and I hope to spend many happy hours out there so I want fun and minimal hassle. thx.

fun and minimal hassle? you need to be thinking about a beer fridge and a stereo system don't you?
Yeah, I want to enjoy my shop. Why in the world would I spend time and money and energy on something that was a hassle and un-fun. What do you do? Seek out unpleasant and unrewarding experiences to build up your character? Or maybe taking pot shots at people while sitting on your rear at your computer.
chill dude. i was just throwing you some light fun. sorry you can't joke around.
Yep, you're right I was over-reacting and not taking a joke. I knew that at the time and didn't just roll with it. I think I was nervous cuz I had never participated before and I felt like the newcomer saying the stupid, dorky thing. Sorry, I promise to lighten up and thanks for the responses.
so what kind of beer is it going to be and will the BBQ be right at elbow??

Are we talking about the same thing?

Where is the Tavern and do I want to go there?
The Tavern is part of Breaktime.....but you need to request access. Contact the SYSOP or one of the moderators with your request. (Or...start a thread on a topic that has nothing to do with construction and when the moderators toss it down into the Tavern, you automatically receive access.)
It used to be just another folder, with topics outside of the construction theme. It was cordoned off when it was decided that some of the discussions become too contentious for the everyday BT visitor.
Basically, just a place to shoot the breeze. Most of the topics are political in nature....or often become so intended or not. It can get ugly from time to time....but most of it is good natured. Those with thinner skin should definetly not visit.
It's kinda funny....no matter how bitterly some of the regulars will argue within the Tavern.....its VERY rarely that those disagreements bleed over into the rest of Breaktime. Buncha nailbangers trying to set one another straight as to whats wrong with the world today. Pretty much your typical Tavern.

Thanks JDRHI. I think I'll pass for now. I must have thin skin - its hard enough to avoid bleeding at work. I don't want my skin punctured at home too.
With a skin that thin, you should think about padding all the surfaces in your new shop.
What's the matter, never hung around with a group of construction guys before?

Some days it's just not worth gnawing through the leather straps.
In the long run both collection systems will have their place..
as you set up allow for the addition of a whole shop collector...
an yes make provisions for a beer tap and stero...

If you haven't already done so, look above this post and click on "Knots" which will get you into the woodworkers' forum. Check their "Advanced Search" for workshops and /or dust systems and you'll find plenty of information.
Also, to check out +/- 100 shops that others have put together, go to this website: http://www.shoptours.org/

You really do need to find your way over to Knots, where like you, most seem to take themselves very seriously.
But in answer to your question, a regular shop vac will work to pick up dust from portable tools.
But if you intend to bring stationary tools to the shop -- table saw, jointer, planer, bandsaw, etc. -- you will need a dust collector. This is not only to help with the mess, but I assume you know that wood dust is a known carninogen.
Since you are building the shop from scratch, this would be the best time to design a dc system -- or at least make basic decisions on how you might install one down hte line.
There are many who are making dc equipment these days, but for my money, the best systems come from Onieda. If you send them a copy of your intended shop lay-out, they will even suggest a design for you sthat will accomodate your planned machines.

If everyone else is looking at that space for game room, entertainment, etc., I think I'd put in a permanent dust collection system and start filling the place with stationary power tools.
Otherwise, in a couple of years, you'll be building a new shop just so you can work in peace.
Really depends on the amount of use. If it's for full time, consider a central/stationary dust collector. Other than that, a moveable dust collector will work. Best recommendation is to get a canister top like in the JET.
For the whole shop, get a air filtration cleaner. As in a jet, oneida, or one of a few other brands I can' remember right now. For you shop length, I would recommend 2, with the exhaust(lean air) blowing towards the long ends of the shop.
Enjoy...

Consider putting the dust collector outside, in a small attached outbuilding. You cut down on the noise and dust that way.
It's also a good place for an air compressor.
I flat LOVE my dust collection system. Onieda designed the ducting, using my cheap Taiwan 2HP collector. Also have the Delta filter thingy that hangs from the ceiling. Makes the shop muchp nice. Consider it!

OK, bad omen. You have to nip this one in the bud. It is either your shop or a game room. If you want "fun and minimum hassle", you don't to move your tools around to make room for a ping-pong table or a sawing machine. The 2 types of uses are incompatible. Stand your ground now, you have "waited your whole life" for it.
I agree Sharpblade.
I'd think about planting a nest of big whopping spiders.

I'm with you on this Blue, I'd be getting my shid in there ASAP, all the junk I could find, all the tools, dont even bother with the dust collector yet, keep it messy until you establish it as yours and slowly convert it to the "ideal shop"
Doug
Spalting Grey,
My shop is just too small (only 30x50) for all the equipment I have. So everything is on wheels. That makes dust collection harder.
I have a 2 HP collection system and using bungee cords I run a 6 inch central leader and 4 inch branch using old furnace ducting.. I run flex hose from the equipment itself to the duct work..
The biggest generator is always nearest to the collector (my 20 planner) while tablesaws bandsaws etc. can be 15 20 feet away..
Think mobility with just a small shop like you are describing.. you'll want to roll stuff out of the way to have clear access to euipment whenever you use longer boards..
If you build home entertainment centers or other pieces that require boards of 10 15 or 20 feet remember you'll need that length both in front and behond the equipment.. plus when you go to finish or even just assemble stuff it's nice to be able to work in a clear area and not have to dance around.
I screwed up.
It took until 5 months ago to get my stereo. How did I live without it?
Still no fridge, but I'm thinking about getting two. One for the "football viewing room" downstairs and one for the shop.
Which should come first?

Don't let these guys bother you. They're just a buncha macho jerks and need to be taught a lesson or two.
Now that you have a real gentleman talking to you...sit down, relax, make yer self at home. Welcome to the greatest show on earth, "soon to be a major motion picture".
What wuz yer question again???
Oh yeh..I like your idea of using the Festool or even the Fein vac. To me it justifies spending $500 bucks on a vacumm...and I still haven't bought one <G>. Actually I use a big ol new Crapsman hooked up to a power surge outlet that has six outlets in it. My vac and my router table (or whatever tool I'm using) is plugged into it too with by a shroud over the dust port of the tool I've put together.
On my router the surge protector does shut off occasionally so if I have to run it a long time forget it. One day when I grow up I'll buy either a Festool or Fein...or when and if I REALLY grow up I'll buy the Onider dust collection sysytem.
If your shop is too small consider maybe building just a small shed to house it in outside your shop. Might make for a nice shop project actually.
Hope to see you around here more often...beware of this guy Piffin though...he's really the maniac of this buncha rouges : )
