Hi! I need some help here.
I have a client that wants to remodel her bathroom ( 2nd floor) and wants to remove an existing walls (shaft) to make it more open. Inside the shaft it runs the gas fireplace duct from the 1st floor, unit that she doesn’t use but don’t want to waste any money removing it. The question: It’s possible to only remove the duct from the 2nd floor and leave the fireplace just as “decoration”? Any additional considerations to keep in mind? Thank you in advance for your comments and/or suggestions.

The concern is that someone else could try to use the gas fireplace in the future.
I thought the abandoned gas light in our front yard, which was rusting away, was disconnected. It was falling over when I hit it with the mower. so I got my 8 pound wood splitter and gave it a whack. While no flames were involved, the local fire trucks did come to visit and keep the area safe while the gas company truck came and stopped the gas leak.
at a minimum, I would want to disconnect and cap the gas line, and hang a tag on the gas fireplace controls that indicates it is condemned and not fit for use.
You also will want to know what is at the top end of the flue, and how it will be secured. (she will not want critters coming into the walls of her new bathroom)
@UncleMike42, Both VERY VALID points! Thanks!
There could be some liability attached to who did the work and the home owner should there be property damage or injury in the future as a result of the work..
I'm assuming that the job is permitted. Ask the building dept. or the inspector for a ruling. Better safe than sorry.
oops, Thank you for your advice! The work will be done with permits and we already contacted to the Building Department to confirm how they want us to proceed, still waiting for their response. I was just looking to get some insight directly from the Pro's on some of the aspects to take into consideration when doing the job.
