So Junkhound’s proposal on burying extension cords got me thinking about my own admittedly questionable use of extension cords.
I strung a piece of stainless cable from our house to the woodshed. It’s under a lot of tension so it’s nice and straight, about a 75′ run. I then suspended a 12ga extension cord with small S hooks every 12″, so the cord is not under any tensile stress. It’s for the purpose of powering lights when I’m splitting wood in the dead of Winter. It’s hung quite high, out of most vehicles reach, and doesn’t look half bad.
But what about weather and UV? IIRC, it’s SJOW rated. Will it last?
thx,
Scott.

I don't know how long it will last, but I would make sure the ss cable is grounded!
Beat me too it!

Your use is fine, and might even meet code requirements.
The places to watch are near the cord ends .... the cable should be supported in a manner that any pulling forces on the cord do not get transmitted to the plugs themselves. You also need to be wary of anything - including the S-hooks - that can rub on the cord.
I also recommend the cord be GFI protected before it leaves the house.
